A proposal to rezone the former Lowe’s store on Milwaukee’s north side to become a distribution center was approved Monday by the Plan Commission.
The commission voted to amend the city’s land use plan, which covers the neighborhood that includes the building, 5800 W. Hope Ave.
It also approved site and building changes for the property and an exemption from performance standards for Midtown Center, the shopping center where the building is located.
Those actions — the land use plan change also needs Common Council approval — will allow the building’s operator, Phoenix Investors LLC, to lease out the property as a distribution center.
Phoenix Investors is negotiating with a local manufacturer that would lease the building for 10 years, said Joe LaDien, general counsel. He declined to name the company, which would eventually have up to 30 employees at the building.
Phoenix plans to add more loading docks, a wall to screen the truck loading area and new landscaping.
Lowe’s Inc. sold the 134,300-square-foot building to a Phoenix affiliate in 2016 for $1.5 million, according to city assessment records.
